Modesto is a Democratic stronghold in the more politically moderate Stanislaus County, where there are nearly as many Republicans registered to vote as Democrats. A CBS News poll last month found that 87% of Democrats in California say Gov. Gavin Newsom has done a very or somewhat good job handling the coronavirus outbreak.
